Reduction & Thinning

Reduction

Large Plane Tree, Buckfastleigh

A private contract approved by Teignbridge Borough Council to reduce overhanging branches to a neighbouring property. This veteran tree was a challenge and a joy to climb. The London Plane typically has pendulous limbs and branches making getting to the ends of the branches to tip prune over obstacles a real challenge to any climber.

In places the tips of the branches could be grasped from ground level. All works were completed to the satisfaction of the client and the local council. As a result we are seeking to undergo local Authority approval for Devon and Cornwall County Councils.

Reduction

Semi Mature Sycamore, Callington

Crown reduction was carried out on this sycamore, which is the most significant tree in the immediate locale. Neighbours were initially anxious due to its size and position. We reassured them of its safety, helped by it surviving strong gales a few days before! However, on inspection a deep cavity at the base was discovered. To avoid felling the tree, which we deemed unnecessary, we decided to lightly crown reduce; maintaining the structure and form but reducing windage.

Local residents are satisfied and glad the tree has been retained as near to its original form as possible. Crossing and rubbing branches were also removed for future safety of the residents.

Expert Advice

Trees with cavities often put on extensive reactionary growth to maintain their structure and typically adapt to their surroundings even if rooted on walls and steep sloping banks.

Reduction of larger trees may be necessary where they have become laterally extended and end weighted preventing future collapse. Many veteran trees have been reduced in the past either by tree surgeons or the effects of age and weather.

Where property and public safety are involved, a yearly check and report of your trees by a tree surgeon can mitigate hazard. If in doubt - get it checked out.
